In 2003 we explored the possibility of importing frozen semen. We were looking for a stallion that not only had an attractive pedigree but who also had an impressive show career. He need not have been ‘the current fashion’ nor a particular colour, but he did need to have the potential to cross-discipline! He must have competed in, and sired horses who competed in, reining, cutting and working cow horse events.
We were introduced to Pete & Tamra Kyle of Kyle Ranch in Whitesboro Texas, and to their stallion Tejons Peppy Doc.
We felt we had found the stallion that fulfilled our criteria.
Tejon is a 4 X World Champion in Reining and Working Cow Horse he has also sired horses who have competed in these events at varying levels. He has the up-close genetics we favoured being by the immortal Peppy San Badger, from a wonderful producing Doc O Lena mare called Doc O Lenita. Tejon is a brother in blood to Chic Please.
Tejon himself is a stunning stallion, pretty enough to halter, with that “scopey physique” we feel is preferred for campdrafting. He is calm, with a trainable mind, and sires foals who possess the same characteristics.
We imagined breeding him to our mare Knights Colette. To mix some of the “best blood of the American Quarter Horse” with “the hardy versatile blood of the Australian Stock Horse” in the hope of producing a horse that had the capacity to compete in Stockman’s Challenge events, draft and cut, as well as providing an outcross for either Quarter horse or Australian Stock Horse breeders. True Blue Tejon or “Kyle” as he is affectionately known was born in 2005. A stunning bay colt, the image of his father, carrying the refinement and athleticism of his mother, he stands close to 15.1HH now at age 3. He is showing all the attributes you would expect from a horse with such a distinguished international pedigree. We believe he is the only Australian Stock Horse-bred colt by a multiple world champion in this country and we thank Pete & Tamra for allowing us the opportunity to import his semen, and for sharing our vision. |
